AgricultureAgriculture

The agricultural area amounts to approx. 1750 acres. At present we grow winter wheat, barley, oil seed rape, stiff-leaved fescue grass, red fescue, and rye grass. The composition of the produce is carefully planned based on the yield of the soil.

Sanderumgaard switched to reduced soil preparation some years ago primarily due to the light soils. This form of cultivation entails that almost no ploughing takes place after harvesting. In this way, the earth’s natural moisture can be preserved which again provides increased yields.

The produce is handled in own drying plant and warehouse.

Vegetable productionVegetable production

In the course of recent years, Sanderumgaard has established a considerable potato production. We supply Kims Chips, located in Søndersø, and various Danish supermarkets with potatoes for ordinary consumption. Potatoes are grown on approx. 325 acres.

Much research has been conducted in order to determine which potato varieties are the most suitable for the area, applications for watering permission have been submitted, and various potato equipment has been borrowed.

Concurrently with gathering know-how, investments have slowly been made in own equipment. At present, the main potato varieties for consumption are Alliance, Belana and the well-known asparagus potato. These potato varieties have proven to be very suitable. Laboratory tests are being performed on Sanderumgaard’s soil to investigate whether it has a special positive effect on the contents of various minerals, etc.

On account of the positive development regarding potatoes, the plan is to proceed with other root vegetables, such as swedes and beetroot to start with.

ForestryForestry

Sanderumgaard’s forestry is divided into plots of varying sizes amounting to a total of 437 acres with mixed tree species.

Forestry and maintenance is performed by the agricultural unit, in addition a forest supervisor is attached.

In connection with the 1999 storm, approx. 50 acres of conifers and beech trees were lost. Subsequently, afforestation has been performed and much of the work now consists of thinning out and looking after the youngest trees.

The major part of the felling goes to firewood and a small amount to industrial purposes.

Christmas trees - Decorative greenaryChristmas trees - Decorative greenary

Since the late Sixties, Sanderumgaard has cultivated Christmas trees and decorative greenary. This area covers approx. 80 acres and each year a considerable number of Christmas trees are exported to Germany and other European countries.

In addition, the annual production of decorative greenary - Nobelis cuttings - amounts to 20 tons.
The estate only participates to a certain degree in this process as most of the work is outsourced.

HuntingHunting

The hunting ground of Sanderumgaard is at present leased out to four consortiums.

There is a considerable natural stock which is especially due to active care and the presence of waterholes, meadows and marshes.
